You can't keep a true Town fan down

I say almost because the weekend started with a Town vice presidents evening. There are number of these gatherings every year, always in the Tom Mitchell lounge, usually on a Friday evening.

We have guest speakers; cast our votes to decide who will be inducted into the Workington Town Hall of Fame and when we get the opportunity we induct those new members.

Friday was a guest speaker, none other that rugby league legend and former Town player, Gary Schofield.

Okay, calling him a Town player is stretching it a bit but half a charity match is good enough for me; and he did manage two points to keep up his record of scoring for every team for whom he has played!

Gary is an entertaining speaker who doesn’t mind saying it as it is, or at the very least the way he sees it.

It would also be fair to say that there are one or two people in the sport for whom he has very little time, and that’s putting it mildly.

Another very entertaining evening, slightly marred by one of our number taking ill.

I know he wouldn’t want to be named but the good news is that he’s out of hospital and has already booked his place on the bus for this weeks away game – you just can’t keep a true Town fan down.

Sunday was a game we knew we had to win if we have any ambition to be in the right place at the business end of the season.

We started well enough and controlled the game for long periods in the first half, the introduction of Darren Holt made an immediate impact and we looked as if we should be comfortable winners.

We won of course and by a wide enough margin to deny Doncaster the bonus point, but it certainly wasn’t comfortable.

We were made to work hard for everything in the second half by a side who certainly upped their game.

Man of the match went to Gus Frazer who’s having a great season, making excellent yards and capping it with a well taken try right at the death.

We are making good signings this year, some players who have a wealth of experience and some exiting younger players to benefit from that experience.

I have no doubt that we will be in the right place at the end of the season, for now though we’ll be in Gateshead on Sunday, shouting them on as usual.
