Whitehaven fans' trust relaunch

The troubled Whitehaven fans’ trust looks set for a re-launch after the departure of controversial chairman Ian Stephenson.

Some supporters had been unhappy at Stephenson’s stewardship of Trust in Haven and called a special general meeting recently at which they hoped to elect a new board and oust him.

But it was called off after it emerged the correct procedure to call the meeting had not been followed.

Now, after Stephenson announced he was to step down, they are looking for the signatures of 20 trust members to enable a steering group to be formed.

“We can then call a special meeting to see what members want to do,” said John Hurst, the trust’s former vice-chairman.

“The trust will be elected by fans to represent them. I don’t want a committee to make the decisions on how things are done, I want fans to make them. They must have their say.”

The trust has been in limbo, but Hurst reckons it could still have a future.

“I still think it can do the job it was built to do. It can work,” he added.

Hurst believes the trust should commit to backing the club wherever possible, and, if shares ever become available in Haven, to purchase a stake, subject to the agreement of members.
