The Maryport Townscape Heritage Initiative (MTHI) is a five year program launched in April 2007 and is hard at work regenerating and revitalising the historic town centre. The initiative has been busy and this summer will see further developments benefitting from funding of £3.65 million pounds.

The fomer Carlton cinema on Senhouse street is due to reopen in August this year with a new lease of life as a ceramic manufaturer. The complex will also house a cafe and retail store with visitors being able to see ceramic creations being made.
A major development of the harbour area is planned and the Shipping Brow project hopes to get going by autumn of this year with a hopeful completion date in time for Christmas festivities. Terraces along Shipping Brow would provide seating areas and a venue for stall hoplders. Lighting and planting schemes have also been designed to complement the proposed development and soften the paved areas. New street furniture and the creation of car parking spaces on King Street are also planned. The scheme is awaiting approval but hopes to be up and running in September of this year.
MTHI are keen to promote the use of traditional building materials and techniques in the restoration of historical areas and have been proactive in running a number of workshops aimed at providing local contractors and apprentices with the skills to repair the town's historic buildings.
