Maryport against racism

A MARYPORT group is doing its bit to build bridges between townsfolk and its migrant community.

Maryport Against Racism aims to create a harmonious link between the local people in Maryport and its increasing migrant community, spreading its message via leaflets, websites and social networking sites as well as organising a Rock against Racism concert in the town.

Jonathan Wood, of Ellenborough, is a co-ordinator for the group.

He said: “There is a lot more immigration in Maryport now but I believe people are becoming far more open to the idea of having migrant workers here.”

Some shops in the town now import various food products from several European countries to help make those moving here feel a little more at home.

Local police officers are also helping to build bridges between the communities by organising football matches between themselves and migrant workers.
