KAREN EVANS reports from the final of Maryport's Battle of the Bands competition at Grasslot Working Men's Club in Maryport.
NINE LIVES were on fire as they blazed through the final of Maryport’s Battle of the Bands to take the winner's spot.
The Workington band, who played a set of pop covers including Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon, proved triumphant as they received the most votes from the audience and the judges.
The runner-up was West Cumbrian blues band Feed Me, which were more than worthy of the second place spot.
Nine Lives will go on to open the 11th Maryport Blues festival, on the main stage on Friday, July 24.
The band's line-up is vocalist Ben McGlasson, 28, lead guitarist Darren Rutter, 22, bassist Phil Ewing, 26, guitarist Andrew Pearson, 24, and drummer Chris Tinkler, 18.
The cover band said they were influenced by Deep Purple, Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver.
Ben said: “I’m absolutely chuffed that we’ve won. I still can’t believe it.
“Everyone put in amazing performances.
“It’s a great honour to have been chosen. We can’t wait to get up there on the stage.”
Darren added: “I’m stunned that we won. We just got up there and had fun and it really paid off.”
Director of the Maryport blues committee Debra Park, 36, said that choosing a winner had been a tough decision for the judges because all the bands had stepped up their game for the final.
Debra said: “This has been the best final we’ve had yet. All the bands gave it their all and Nine Lives proved to be very popular with the crowd.
“I’ve advised Nine Lives to practice hard and to treat their position with some seriousness. It’s a lot of responsibility and they will be representing Maryport in front of thousands of people.”
