MARYPORT’S mayor has developed a scheme to educate schoolchildren about the work of the town council.
Mary Telford is introducing the scheme to all schools in the Maryport area.
She developed the idea after she saw how much her own children enjoyed attending council meetings and finding out more about what their mum did at work.
Her scheme allows schoolchildren to elect fellow pupils to represent them and ask questions.
Kasey Lee Marsh, Antony Campbell, Paul Wallace, Demi Lee Lamb, Luke Richardson, Liam Holt and Rebecca Woods from Ellenborough and Ewanrigg School, Victory Crescent, attended a session last Friday.
Mary said: “My children often accompany me to work and have really enjoyed learning about the inner workings of local council.
“It is important that we introduce young people to our local government at an early age as it is a huge part of our daily lives.
“At the moment we are struggling to get teenagers and older people interested in running for council so the scheme will also help to increase council members in the future.”
